A new policy paper from the ODIN and ODIN Mpox projects has been published in Open Access Government. “From Surveillance to Systems: Scaling Environmental Genomics for Epidemic Preparedness in Africa” explores how environmental and wastewater surveillance is moving from research into practical public health implementation.

The paper highlights ODIN’s mobile laboratory deployment, genomic sequencing, capacity strengthening, standardised surveillance approaches and collaboration with African public health institutions. It also considers how environmental genomics can support earlier outbreak detection and more resilient surveillance systems, while calling for sustained investment and integration into public health infrastructure.
