In Tanzania, the ODIN Consortium is collaborating with the National Institute for Medical Research, the National Public Health Laboratory and other international partners to address the challenge of waterborne diseases and antimicrobial resistance by strengthening national capacity in genomic surveillance.
From 21st to 29th July 2025, the consortium organised an intensive training workshop that combined practical laboratory and bioinformatics sessions. Through the training, scientists from the National Public Health Laboratory and the National Institute for Medical Research gained hands-on experience in sequencing technologies, DNA extraction, library preparation, genome assembly, and the identification of resistance and virulence genes. These new skills will improve Tanzania’s capacity to monitor pathogens in wastewater and strengthen the national early warning system for outbreaks. Furthermore, the workshop has laid a foundation for a sustainable national wastewater genomic surveillance programme using a One Health approach that links environmental and clinical data.
